7 Ways HR Becomes More Vital as AI Spreads (Not Less)

  • Bastida et al. (2025) describe HR’s journey “from automation to augmentation” using AI to amplify HR and people decisions, not just speed up admin.

What that means for HR:

  • Redesign jobs around Human-AI teaming
    • Decide which tasks AI should:
      • Automate
      • Assist
      • Leave entirely to humans
    • Rewrite role expectations accordingly.
  • Protect and expand high-judgment, relational, and creative work
    • Use AI to strip out low-value tasks: copy/paste, basic drafting, routine updates.
    • Free up capacity for:

      • Relationship-building
      • Complex problem-solving
  • Re-architect teams and career paths

This is the layer virtually every failure case name-checks, and HR is the only function actually trained to run it.

6) People Analytics & AI-Enhanced Decision-Making

AI is supercharging people analytics:

  • Richer views on skills, engagement, mobility, sentiment, and risk.

But tools alone don’t create better decisions.

HR’s role:

  • Use AI to ask better questions, not just get more dashboards
    • What emerging skill clusters are we seeing?
    • Where do we have “quiet flight risk”?
    • Which teams are actually adapting to AI, and which are stalling?
  • Train leaders to challenge AI outputs
    • Teach them to treat AI as a second opinion, not an oracle.

  • Use that to inform strategy, not just post-rationalize it.

If HR owns this well, AI becomes a force multiplier for good judgment, not a fancy way to justify decisions already made.

7) Protecting Well-Being & Inclusion in an AI-Intense Environment

Gartner’s future-of-work trends for CHROs emphasize three intertwined issues: AI integration, well-being, and inclusion.

Meanwhile, global studies on AI at work show:

  • High adoption, low training, and rising anxiety about job security, deskilling, and surveillance.

HR’s job here:

  • Monitor the human cost of AI
    • Watch how AI-driven monitoring, workload expectations, and “always-on” productivity tools affect stress and burnout.
    • Use surveys, ER cases, and HR data to flag hotspots.
  • Ensure AI doesn’t quietly undermine inclusion
    • Who gets access to AI tools and training?
    • Who gets the “augmented” roles vs the “automated away” tasks?
    • Are stretch assignments and visibility being allocated fairly in the AI era?
